The American Dental Association recommends that individuals, both young and old, go to the dentist’s office for a cleaning and exam every six months, or two times a year.
Dental cleanings will begin in a similar manner to a general health checkup, with the collection of dental and medical histories. This helps the dentist to identify any issue or condition which could increase a person’s risk for developing gum disease or tooth decay. For example, a patient who is diabetic will be at a much higher risk for dental health issues than non-diabetic patients. Next, any complaints or symptoms which the patient has been dealing with recently will be discussed with the dentist. The cleaning itself will start with a thorough inspection of the patient’s gums and teeth as well as obtaining dental x-rays. X-rays are particularly helpful when the patient is a first time visitor. Each tooth will be evaluated for any signs of tooth decay or damage. For adult patients, an oral cancer screening may also be necessary. Lastly, if any dental hygiene changes need to be made or if treatment needs to begin the dentist will discuss these with his patients.
Consistent brushing and flossing habits utilized between cleanings are exceptionally important. Employing the products, tools, and techniques recommended by the dentist will also be extremely beneficial. Limiting the amount of sugary foods and drinks you ingest can be helpful as well. This is because harmful bacteria thrive off of sugars. To avoid staining natural and prosthetic teeth, rinse your teeth after drinking or eating foods such as coffee, tea, and soda. When participating in sports, wear a mouthguard for protection and wear a night guard if you grind your teeth. Do not pry off lids with your teeth or chew on hard candy or ice.
