Porcelain Crowns Q & A

by Mark Castor, DDS

What are Crowns?

Crowns are dental prosthetics adhered to patient’s teeth using a strong bonding agent. They can also be used to top implants. Crowns are designed to be permanent and can only be removed by a dentist. They are meant to act like an artificial tooth which is also aesthetically pleasing. These dental devices strengthen teeth and can improve their appearance if the tooth has been stained, cracked, broken, or chipped. Frequently, crowns are used to repair damage when the tooth doesn’t need to be pulled. Additionally, crowns are used with dental implants to replace a missing tooth and provide a very stable, long lasting solution. Since they can be color-matched to the teeth next to it, a porcelain crown is typically preferred.

Why are Crowns Used?

Dentists utilize crowns to:

  • Attach a bridge
  • Cover a tooth which has undergone root canal therapy
  • Cover a misshaped or discolored tooth
  • Protect a damaged tooth
  • Replace a large filling
  • Top a dental implant post

If the crown is well cared for it can last a person for quite a long time, if not for the rest of their life. If a crown does become damaged, loose, or even falls off the dentist can repair or replace it in the office.

What Types of Porcelain Crowns Are There?

Usually, porcelain crowns come in two types— porcelain-fused-to-metal and all-porcelain crowns.

  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns will look very similar to a natural tooth and the color can be matched to the neighboring teeth. This type of crown can cause additional wear to the opposite tooth. In some cases, patients can see a grey line around the base of the tooth near the gum line where the metal is peeking through.
  • The most natural looking results come from all-porcelain crowns. Those fused to metal are typically a bit stronger however. All-porcelain crowns can wear down the opposite tooth more as well. They are generally utilized for front teeth.
