Dental Emergency Q & A

What Type of Circumstances Qualify as a Dental Emergencies?

A dental emergency can be considered any situation where a person would need immediate or prompt attention from the dentist. Some of the most frequent dental emergencies are:

  • Toothaches
  • Pain in and around the jaw
  • Inflamed gums
  • Lost or loose crowns, veneers, fillings, or onlays,
  • Abscesses
  • Chips, cracks, or broken teeth
  • Lost or broken bridges, implants, or dentures
  • Teeth which have been knocked out or have fallen out

What Should I do if a Tooth is Knocked Out?

When a tooth is knocked out it is a very serious situation and one of the more severe emergencies. If a person has a tooth knocked out due to trauma or injury to the mouth, he or she must proceed to the dentist’s office immediately in order to increase the chances of preserving the tooth. Without touching the root, try to insert the tooth back into the original socket. It is very important to avoid touching the root since this could damage the nerves, making it impossible to reattach. If you cannot put the tooth back in the socket, or if it is a child which has had their tooth knocked out, try to place it between the cheek and gums or if that is also not an option put the tooth in a glass of milk. Do not put the tooth in tap water. Time is of the essence, so come into the office right away.

How Can I Prevent a Dental Emergency?

Healthy teeth are much more difficult to break or knock out. To keep your teeth and gums healthy, be sure to undergo regular dental cleanings and routine visits at the dentist’s office as well as brush and floss teeth every day. When you are participating in sports or are engaged in an activity where the teeth or mouth could be hit you should be sure to use a protective mouthguard. Lastly, do not use your teeth to pry off lids and do not chew on hard candies or ice.
