Fillings Q & A

What is a Filling?

To repair a tooth which has been corrupted by decay a cavity filling is used. This returns normal function and shape to the tooth. Once decayed tooth material has been removed, the dentist will clean the affected area of any debris and install a filling. There are several types of filling materials. A filling can also assist with preventing additional decay.

What Types of Fillings Are There?

Depending on the extent of the damage, whether the person is allergic to any materials, where in the person’s mouth the filling is needed, and the cost of the material, patients may choose one of many filling materials such as:

  • Gold fillings and inlays are accepted by gum tissues very well and can last upwards of 20 years. Several experts believe gold is the best filling material. However, it is typically the costliest and requires multiple visits to the dentist.
  • Silver Amalgam fillings oppose wear and are comparatively low-priced. However, they are more visible and are not normally used in observable regions such as the front teeth. An amalgam filling can be an alloy of silver, copper, mercury, tin and sometimes zinc.
  • Composite resins are color-matched to teeth and are commissioned when a natural look is preferred. Composites may not be the best for large fillings since they can chip and wear after some time. They can also stain and typically last from 3 to 10 years.
  • Porcelain fillings are known as inlays or onlays. They are custom made in a laboratory and then adhered to teeth. They can also be color-matched and oppose staining. A porcelain filling will cover the majority of the tooth and they have a similar cost as gold.

What Happens When I Get a Filling?

If the dentist needs to fill a cavity, he will help patients choose the best material and will usually be able to fill the cavity on the same day. Any discomfort experienced should be minimal.
