Root Canal Q & A

What is an Endodontist?

When addressing concerns regarding the interior of the tooth such as an abscess a specially trained dentist is needed. This dentist is known as an endodontist. Endodontists assist with:

  • Implant placements and restorations,
  • root canals, root canal retreatment,
  • apicoectomies,
  • treatment of chipped or broken tooth, and
  • dental emergencies

These procedures are designed to treat any issues which affect the integrity, strength of the tooth and its structure. Endodontic tooth treatments are more complex and will often require more time in the chair.

When Would I Receive These Treatments?

If a person has a tooth ache, needs a tooth replaced or a chipped or cracked tooth repaired, or even needs treatment for tender or swollen gums he or she will work with the endodontist. The most common procedure performed is the root canal which treats an infected tooth.

What are Root Canals?

To remove the decay when a tooth is abscessed or infected and save the tooth from extraction, the dentist will perform a root canal. The inside layer of the tooth located underneath the hard outer shell is a section known as the pulp. This pulp is the home of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues. The pulp can become aggravated or inflamed, typically due to infection, and will require a root canal for treatment. Chips, decay, faulty crowns, and/or repeated dental procedures can all cause infections. An abscess can form if the infection is not dealt with.  An abscess needs to be cleaned out in order to be fixed. Once this decayed tissue is no longer present, the cavity is cleaned which kills the bacteria. A rubber-like material is then put inside the tooth’s cavity. A crown or filling is then put over the top of the tooth. These treatments can prevent a tooth extraction but they are not suitable for every situation.
