Why Do Teeth Become Dingy? 

Teeth yellow and start to look dirty because they stain, usually because of eating or drinking things such as berries, tea, and coffee. Smoking and using other tobacco products such as chewing tobacco can also teeth to yellow and even look brown. Whitening treatments available at the dentist’s office can generally remove this discoloration. However, in some more rare situations the staining is internal. This is typically caused by an injury to the tooth and in these cases deep internal bleaching or the use of a veneer or crown will be needed to restore the original look of the tooth. Some medications can also cause teeth to look dingy or discolored in addition to undergoing multiple dental procedures.

How Safe is Teeth Whitening?

Whitening teeth, also referred to as bleaching, which is performed at the dentist’s office will be very safe. The doctor only uses methods which have been proven to be effective and do not cause any adverse side effects. Tooth sensitivity can occur with the treatment however it usually very mild and will resolve quickly. The point of these treatment is to improve the look of teeth, not harm them.

What is the Zoom Whitening Procedure Like?

In order to whiten teeth, they must first be cleaned and examine for any signs of decay. If found, the whitening treatment may have to wait until the damage is taken care of. Zoom whitening works by utilizing a state-of-the-art, light activated gel which is made with hydrogen peroxide. This gel interacts with a specially designed light to whiten a person’s teeth. To ensure that each tooth is coated will the gel evenly and also exposed to the light evenly, the patient’s lips are held back with a retainer. The light is then directed on the teeth for roughly 15 minutes. Lastly, the gel is wiped away and the retainer removed. Immediately following the procedure, patients should be able to notice whiter teeth.
